HOP League Session – Captain Responsibilities
Captains serve as key leaders and communicators for their teams and are expected to uphold club values on and off the court.
1 Captain Selection
As part of our mission to foster fun, fair, and well‑organized play, each team will designate one captain to take on the following responsibilities.
Each team will elect one captain by a majority vote of the team’s players. Might be based on volunteering.
Captains may be re‑elected or replaced by team vote at the start of a new league season or before the start of a new session.
2 Team Registration & Financial Responsibility
Captains are responsible for collecting any required registration fees from their team members and submitting team registration & payment into to your team’s participating club.
A single league session costs are up to each club. See the participating clubs for pricing.
Your club may opt to order official HOP T-shirts and use PBRally to register teams. Official HOP T-shirts are required for STATE Playoffs and Championship in March.
Leagues are setup and run by each club in hopes of sending their best teams in each division to the STATE playoff in March.
Alternates (subs) paying for games is up to the discretion of the captain and team vote.
3 Team Communication
The captain will serve as the sole official point of contact between their team and the club organizers or HOP league administration.
All important updates, announcements, and scheduling information will be relayed through the captain, who must then communicate these to team members promptly and clearly.
4 Administrative Duties
Each club will handle the captain responsibilities to their own liking. Likely a team captain will receive a “captain’s envelope” with responsibilities for that league.
Anyone on your “Team” is eligible to play in a given league night.
Any changes to the original team roster after team registration, must be requested for review/communicated and then be approved by the club HOP rep.
The captain needs to make sure they have assigned someone on their team to mark Timeouts (and track timing) on the provided paper scoring sheet (captain’s envelope) during game play, or do it themselves.
The game clock will be managed by the home court team and the home captain will assign a player from their team to start and stop the clock as needed and score keep.
Captains are responsible for verifying scores at the end of each match and writing them into the score sheet.
Score sheets are to be provided to the club’s HOP administration at the end of each league night.
The captain needs to manage the flow of their team on the courts to make sure games stay on track within court reservation time booked (follow provided exact timeline the league is to follow. This will likely be provided in the captain envelope.)
Captains must keep the score sheets in the captain’s envelope and deliver the full envelope for verification at the end of the league session.
5 Team Conduct & Sportsmanship
Captains are expected to ensure good sportsmanship and appropriate behavior from all team members during matches and while at the clubs. There is zero tolerance for any poor sportsmanship for this league. The HOP League Administration will decide on if certain team members will be allowed to continue to participate in the league if this is not followed.
If any issues arise (e.g., disputes, misconduct, or complaints), the captain should address them respectfully and may be required to report them to club staff as well as HOP league Administration.
6 Rule Knowledge & Education
Captains should be familiar with the league rules and format and are expected to explain the rules to their team as needed. These will be provided in the captain’s envelope.
While captains are not expected to be referees, they should make a good‑faith effort to ensure that matches are played fairly and according to the established rules and work with other captains to fairly resolve any disputes.
7 Captain’s Meeting
Clubs may have a captain’s meeting to explain the league format, but this at the discretion of each club.
Note: Failure to fulfill captain responsibilities may result in a team penalty, reassignment of captaincy by team vote or intervention by club leadership.
